PART 1: BEST MARKETS FOR THE "REAL" LOCAL EXPERIENCE
For the freshest catch at the most affordable prices, head straight to these traditional markets:
Vinh Luong Market (Vinh Luong Fishing Port): Located on Highway 1A (15km North of the center). The largest fishing port in the region. Seafood is incredibly cheap as it is moved directly from boats. Best from 5 AM - 7 AM.
Vinh Truong Market (Vinh Truong Fishing Port): Vo Thi Sau Street, South Nha Trang. A major seafood hub. You can buy at "wholesale prices" at dawn.
Xom Moi Market: Ngo Gia Tu Street, Nha Trang. Located in the heart of the city, very convenient for tourists. Carefully selected and diverse seafood.
Vinh Hai Market: 2/4 Street, North Nha Trang. A seafood paradise for locals and students with very soft prices.
Bau Market (Thap Ba Area): Near Xom Bong Bridge, North Nha Trang. A small market but extremely fresh due to its proximity to the river mouth.
Dam Market: Ben Cho, Nha Trang. The largest market in the city, offering everything from fresh seafood to dried specialties.
PART 2: TIPS FOR SELECTING TOP-QUALITY SEAFOOD
Lunar Calendar: Avoid buying crabs/flower crabs around the full moon (mid-month) as they tend to be watery and soft.
Firmness Check: Press firmly on the underside (the apron) of the crab. If it’s hard, the meat is solid; if it’s soft or sinks, it’s watery and low on meat.
Fresh Squid: Look for clear eyes and glowing skin. Cloudy eyes or soft flesh mean it’s been on ice for too long.
Weighing Trick: Tear a small hole in the corner of the plastic bag to let the water out before weighing. Don't be shy; it's a smart shopping habit!
PART 3: SIMPLE COOKING – PRESERVING THE TASTE OF THE SEA
Squid/Shrimp Steamed with Beer & Lemongrass: Line the pot with crushed lemongrass, add seafood, and half a can of beer. Steam for 5-10 minutes. Beer removes the fishy smell and enhances the sweetness.
Grilled Fish with Green Chili Salt: Cobia or Mackerel marinated with grain salt and crushed green chili, wrapped in foil. The spicy green chili is the perfect partner for Khanh Hoa fish.
Grilled Shellfish with Scallion Oil: Add a bit of lard and scallions over snails or oysters as they cook on charcoal for a rich, crunchy flavor.
💡 IIGO'S ADVICE: Shop before 8 AM for "Grade A" seafood. Bring cash and haggle slightly (10k - 20k) for a friendly local experience!
