Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography is located in the Cầu Đá area of Nha Trang City, Khánh Hòa Province. Established in 1922, it is one of Vietnam’s longest-standing marine scientific research institutions and is currently affiliated with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
In addition to conducting research on the sea and marine organisms, the Institute of Oceanography is an appealing destination for visitors interested in nature, science, and ocean exploration. It houses a rich collection of marine organisms, research specimens, live marine exhibits, and a notable whale skeleton.
Through its exhibitions, visitors can learn more about marine ecosystem diversity, the characteristics of different species, and the role of the ocean in the natural environment.
The predecessor of the Institute of Oceanography was the Indochinese Fisheries and Oceanographic Service, established in Nha Trang on September 14, 1922, during the French colonial period. Its establishment marked an important milestone in the development of oceanographic research in the region.
In 1930, the institution was upgraded and renamed the Institute of Indochinese Oceanography, expanding its role in marine research and surveys of the seas around Indochina.
In 1952, the institution was transferred to Vietnamese management and became known as the Nha Trang Oceanographic Institute. After 1975, marine research organizations underwent several administrative reorganizations. In 1993, the name Institute of Oceanography came into use.
Over the course of its development, the institute has built up a collection of scientific records and specimens and conducted research on marine organisms, ocean environments, marine resources, and islands. Today, it serves both as a scientific research institution and as a public venue for introducing marine knowledge through exhibitions and visitor activities.
Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography occupies a campus comprising facilities for research, specimen preservation, and visitor services. Its main building features traditional architecture associated with the institute’s history, giving it a distinctive presence along Nha Trang’s coastline.
The exhibition areas introduce various aspects of the ocean, ranging from living marine organisms to preserved specimens used for scientific research. The institute also displays collections of marine animals, biological specimens, and materials related to Vietnam’s marine resources and environment.
Combining visual displays with scientific information, the exhibition spaces allow visitors to observe the characteristics of different species, learn about their habitats, and better understand the role of oceanographic research in marine ecosystem conservation.
One of the main attractions of Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography is its diverse exhibition system, which showcases marine life and scientific materials accumulated over many years of research.
Through these displays, visitors can engage with scientific knowledge in a visual and accessible way, from identifying marine species to learning about marine resources and the importance of conservation.
A visit to Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography offers an opportunity to explore the ocean through specimens, tanks containing living marine organisms, and scientific materials.
Visitors can begin at the live marine exhibits to observe different species before moving on to the preserved specimen collections. The whale skeleton is a particularly noteworthy stop, especially for animal lovers and those interested in large marine creatures.
The scientific exhibitions also provide valuable learning experiences for schoolchildren, university students, and families with young children. Through the explanatory materials, visitors can learn about biodiversity, marine habitats, and the challenges involved in protecting ocean ecosystems.
Because much of the visit takes place indoors, the institute can be a suitable option on hot days or when weather conditions are unfavorable for outdoor marine activities. Visitors are encouraged to spend time reading the exhibition information to gain more from their visit.
The Institute of Oceanography plays an important role in marine scientific research in Vietnam. Over the years, it has developed and preserved scientific records and specimens for research into marine organisms, ocean environments, and marine resources.
These collections are valuable not only for preservation but also for research, teaching, and public science education. By presenting specimens and information about marine ecosystems, the institute helps visitors better understand biodiversity and the relationship between humans and the natural environment.
Exhibitions about marine resources and islands also raise awareness of the ocean’s importance to daily life, the economy, and the environment. They provide opportunities to learn about marine conservation, responsible resource use, and ecosystem protection against human impacts.
The combination of scientific research and public engagement gives Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography its distinctive value. It preserves the legacy of marine research while helping spread scientific knowledge and appreciation of the ocean across generations.
Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography is located in the Cầu Đá area, in the southern part of Nha Trang City, Khánh Hòa Province, near Cầu Đá Port.
Opening hours and ticket prices may change according to the managing institution’s regulations. Visitors should check the latest information before their trip, especially when traveling in groups or seeking discounted admission. During the visit, follow on-site instructions and regulations to protect the exhibits and marine organisms.
